First Terror Plot Stemming From Syria Conflict in The UK

A 31-year-old father of two, Mashudur Choudhury, has been "convicted of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts," making him first person with connections to the conflict in Syria to be convicted on terrorism charges.

Choudhury is from Portsmouth and Kingston Crown Court "heard he had traveled to Syria to attend a terrorist training camp."

According to BBC News, Choudhury "was arrested at Gatwick Airport on this return to the UK."

Prosecutors in Choudhury's case argued that he "wanted to be trained in the use of firearms" and "intended to pursue a 'political, religious, or ideological cause.'" Prosecutors said Choudhury had also discussed becoming a "martyr."

He will be sentenced on June 13.
