President Obama will meet with Ukraine’s president-elect Petro Poroshenko on his trip to Europe next week. The men will meet in Poland when Obama speaks in Warsaw to celebrate Poland’s 25th anniversary break from communism.
Obama will speak about the importance of allies and remind the Polish that America is committed to defending NATO allies, especially in the face of Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine.
“In the context of Russia’s intervention into Ukraine’s territory, it’s a very powerful moment to both look back at the history of how Polish democracy was won, but also look at the current moment and the need for the United States and Europe to stand together on behalf of the security of Eastern Europe and to stand in support of democratic values,” said Obama’s foreign policy advisor Ben Rhodes.
After the Poland trip, Obama and Poroshenko will head to Normandy to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Russian President Vladimir Putin will be in attendance, along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and French President Francois Hollande. Putin will meet with Hollande in a formal meeting, which will be the first time a Western leader meets with Putin since Ukraine ousted Russia-backed President Viktor Yanukovych in February.
