Video of Silvio Berlusconi Doing Community Service at Nursing Home Surfaces
In April, an Italian court convicted former head of state Silvio Berlusconi on charges of tax fraud. Given the 77-year-old's increasingly fragile state, the court decided it would be best for Berlusconi to serve out his sentence through community service. This week, a video leaked of the former president helping the elderly at a nursing home.
The video, recorded by journalist Stefano Apuzzo and published by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, shows Berlusconi joking with the residents of a nursing home and chatting with the people he now serves. Apuzzo claimed that he also saw Berlusconi give a necklace to an elderly woman, which The Telegraph explains recalls "Berlusconi’s habit of handing out jewelry to the scores of young women who attended his "bunga bunga" nights at his villa near Milan."
Some have called for the video to be taken down, as doctors at the nursing home had previously strictly enforced a no-media policy in the nursing home for the privacy of the residents therein.
Berlusconi received his sentence for tax fraud following an extensive trial in which he was found not guilty of having engaged in sexual relations with an underaged girl. He also faced the charge of attempting to bribe an Italian senator. While his legal woes have been garnering headlines for years, he is still very much considered the core of the Forza Italia party, under which he ran the nation during his tenure. Berlusconi's name remains on the party logo.
Berlusconi is expected to continue working in the nursing home for the remainder of the year as part of his sentence.
