Doctor Who Refused Ebola Treatment So Colleague Could Receive It Now In U.S. For Treatment

Amid a situation in which the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms 163 Ebola virus diagnosis and “61 deaths reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone” in the last few days alone, reports indicate that two Americans are among the infected.

One of the those Americans–Dr. Kent Brantly–was diagnosed in Liberia, and upon learning that there was only enough experimental serum for one person, he asked that the serum be used on his colleague–Nancy Writebol–instead of himself. 

In the serum’s stead, NBC News reported Brantley “received a unit of blood from a 14-year-old boy who had survived Ebola because of Dr. Brantly’s care.” 

But while Brantly was being readied for a flight to the United States for treatment, he was able to receive the serum as well. He is now in Atlanta and will receive treatment at Emory University Hospital; Writebol will receive treatment there too.

Although there is no known cure for Ebola, Brantly’s condition has reportedly gotten better. Samaritan’s Purse’s Franklin Graham says he is “grateful” for “news that Brantly’s condition is improving.” 

Brantly’s wife said her family “was rejoicing over Kent’s safe arrival” and said she believes Brantly “is getting the best possible care.”
