Kurdish fighters in Syria told the BBC that they have retaken a strategic hilltop from the Islamic State militants in the Syria-Turkey border town of Kobane.
U.S.-led air strikes reportedly assisted the Kurdish fighters in recapturing the hill known as Tall Shair.
The Islamic State, also known as ISIS, seized the hilltop more than ten days ago. Kobane has been besieged by ISIS jihadists for about a month.
“On Tuesday sources in the Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) told the BBC that they had regained control of Tall Shair hill-top, about 4km (2.5 miles) to the west and near an informal border crossing,” reported the British news outlet.
The article noted that, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, ISIS now controls approximately half of Kobane.
Taking over the town on the Syrian side of the Syria-Turkey border would give ISIS control over a swath of land from its proclaimed headquarters in Raqqa, Syria, to the Turkish border. That would also facilitate the entrance of foreign jihadists into Syria through Turkey.
