TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 20 (UPI) –On Sunday night, the U.S. military airdropped weapons, ammunition and medical supplies to Kurdish fighters in Syria who are defending the border town of Kobane from Islamic State control.
According to U.S. Central Command, the airdropped supplies “were provided by Kurdish authorities in Iraq and intended to enable continued resistance against ISIL’s attempts to overtake Kobane.”
IS, also known as ISIL, has been engaged in a month-long battle with Kurdish forces for control of the Syria-Turkey border town.
The U.S. military has conducted more than 135 airstrikes to help deter IS advances on Kobane. Reports from Kurdish fighters on the ground Thursday indicated that IS militants had been pushed out of most of Kobane, with pockets of resistance.
Sunday’s airdrops by a U.S. Air Force C-130 aircraft were part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led mission to degrade and destroy IS.
