Early investigations revealed that the second victim inside the case had been there three to four days and starting to decompose. Her passport was also found at the scene.

A police source told the newspaper: ‘She was nearly decapitated and her hands and legs were bound with ropes. She was naked and wrapped in a towel before being stuffed into the luggage.’

Footage captured on CCTV showed one of the women and the suspect returning to the 31st-floor flat at around midnight, while a small amount of cocaine was discovered in the living room. A neighbour at the 40-storey J Residence – a high-end development favoured by junior expatriate bankers – said he had noticed an odd smell recently.

He told the SCMP: ‘There was a stink in the building like a dead animal. It was a shock because you would never expect something like this to happen in Hong Kong.’
