49ers Want McCartney to Ditch Candlestick, Perform at New Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to rub more salt in the wound of the city of San Francisco and Candlestick Park by trying to lure Paul McCartney to perform at their new Santa Clara stadium.

The 49ers left Candlestick Park to move to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, and if they succeed in getting McCartney to perform this summer it would, as the San Francisco Chronicle notes, “effectively yank the rug out from under San Francisco’s plans for the music legend to headline a final send-off concert at Candlestick Park.”

According to the Chronicle, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee “personally invited McCartney” to close Candlestick Park to “say goodbye to the ballpark where the Beatles played their final paid concert in 1966.”

But while touring Candlestick Park, McCartney’s envoys reportedly “let slip that they had just visited Levi’s Stadium as part of negotiations with the Niners for an opening concert there in early August.”

One San Francisco official described the move as “classless” and viewed it as yet another insult to the city by the 49ers organization since it decided to leave Candlestick Park.
