Shots rang out Sunday morning near the Valley Center, California, property of Michael Steven Thyberg as he reportedly fired his weapon at two nature walkers passing nearby. Coaxed out of his home by a deputy in a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, the man was held while his property was searched and found to be the site of a 289-plant marijuana farm.
The events led to Thyberg’s arrest and booking into county jail on counts of assault with a deadly weapon, marijuana production, criminal threats, and being a felon possessing a firearm according to The Los Angeles Times.
The Times also reported Thyberg’s claim that the shots fired at the morning walkers were merely warning shots meant to deter trespassers.
During the search of Thyberg’s property, the Sheriff’s Department reported having uncovered 40 pounds of processed marijuana, a lab to extract hashish oil, five grams of hash wax, a shotgun and ammunition in addition to the 289 marijuana plants.
In April, the city of San Diego began the process of offering permits to medical marijuana dispensaries. While it was reportedly determined that Thyberg’s plants were being grown for sale, it is not known whether the plants found at Thyberg’s property were meant for medical or recreational purposes.
