Jerry Brown's Former Cleaning Lady Targets Him with Anti-Fracking Sculpture

The Sacramento Bee reports that a former janitor for the state of California who once cleaned Jerry Brown’s apartment received an award of merit from the California State Fair for depicting him with a knife in his hand looming over a California-shaped cake decorated with an oil derrick.

“Happy Fracking Day” is a sculpture created by Laura Harling to slam Brown for supporting hydraulic fracturing. The piece includes Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Brown’s dog, Sutter.

Hydraulic fracturing is the process by which water and chemicals are shot under ground to break up shale rock formations to retrieve natural gas.

Harling cleaned Brown’s apartment during his tenure as governor from 1975 to 1983. She has also sculpted the Zen-loving governor in the lotus position and dancing with Newsom.

Harling chortled, “I really wasn’t planning on doing another one of Jerry, but the fracking thing was just, it just seemed like the perfect opportunity to do another sculpture.”

Brown has come under assault from fellow Democrats for signing legislation in 2013 that created a permitting system for hydraulic fracturing.
