On September 3, a drug bust in San Leandro, California led to the discovery and confiscation of “assault rifles” and parts painted to look like toy guns.
Among the parts where those of two AK-47s painted to look like they had an orange tip on them–the kind of tip normally associated with an Airsoft brand toy gun.
According to KTVU, police Lieutenant Robert McManus said the discovery of real guns made to look like toys means “law enforcement could be at risk if…faced with one of these guns in a shoot or don’t shoot situation.” He said, “The officer is going to be forced to shoot to protect their own life or to protect someone else, regardless [of] if [the gun] has a plastic tip on it.”
On November 23 Breitbart News reported on legislation sponsored by CA state senator Nova Evans (D-Santa Rosa) requiring toy and BB guns to be painted bright colors. At that time, NBC Los Angeles reported that critics of Evans’ legislation argued the bill would simply open the door for criminals to paint their guns like toys and trick police into not shooting.
