Drought Causing Bears to Break into Homes

Drought Causing Bears to Break into Homes

The California drought is causing starving bears to be more aggressive than ever around Lake Tahoe, breaking into buildings to search for food, according to FOX40.

The food that bears normally eat in the wild has dried up to such a degree that the Nevada Department of Wildlife has trapped and released nine bears in the last week who were foraging in the Tahoe/Reno area.

Bear League executive director Ann Bryant told FOX40 that she has been alerted every day of another break-in to buildings by a bear.

Normally, the Bear League deals with bears’ aggressiveness by suggesting people minimize contact with bears. This has included people keeping food and garbage in places difficult for bears to reach, making loud noises to frighten bears away, and non-lethal electric fencing around homes.
