There is at least one big payoff to being a powerful Democrat in California–literally, in the most recent case. Former California Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg admitted that when he leaves the state government on November 30, he will head for the law and lobbying firm of Greenberg Traurig LLP. Steinberg is expected to become will be chairman of the firm’s California Government Law and Policy Practice.
State law will prevent him from lobbying state officials for the first year after he takes the new job, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Richard Rosenbaum, Greenberg Traurig LLP’s chief executive officer, stated, “Our clients want the deep understanding of state and local governance that Senator Steinberg will bring after decades of public service, including the last several years at the focal point of California government.”
Steinberg gushed, “I want to combine my knowledge and experience with the Greenberg Traurig platform to find lasting solutions for the challenges and opportunities facing our clients throughout the state,” the Times reported. He will also create the Steinberg Institute for Advancing Mental Health Policy to work on building “a full network of community services and support for people living with mental illness.”
