British comedian Rik Mayall has died at the age of 56, according to his spokesperson.
Mayall, who is famed for his comedic appearances in hit shows such as The New Statesman, Bottom, and Blackadder, passed away today, though no mention has yet been made of the cause of death.
He began his career in stand up comedy in the 1980s, and went on to feature in the historical comedy Blackadder, before becoming a star in his own right by playing fictional Conservative Member of Parliament Alan Beresford B’Stard in The New Statesman.
Mayall starred in the crude sitcom ‘Bottom’ in the 90s, and more recently narrated childrens books and featured in television adverts.
In 2011 Mayall returned as Alan B’Stard in a television advertisement against ‘Alternative Vote’ referendum. Wikipedia notes: “The character is shown being elected under the alternative vote system, then using his newly gained position of power to renege on his campaign promises. In his personal life, Rik Mayall does not support the alternative vote.”
