WATCH: 'ID Cards' Are Latest EU Threat to Freedom
A UKIP MEP has condemned a proposed EU-wide social security scheme as an attempt to introduce "an EU ID card through the back door".
Jane Collins said that the proposals could represent a serious threat to individual freedom, and had already been rejected by the UK parliament.
She also added that there were numerous practical problems, including how information will be collected, stored and updated. Furthermore, any information collected would be held by the European Union, which is unaccountable to the British public.
It may also be possible that the EU could use the data to eventually impose Europe-wide taxes, and a EU-wide minimum wage, thus further bypassing elected national parliaments and handing more power to the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels.
