Huge Fire at Ferrybridge Power Station

A huge fire has broken out at the Ferrybridge power station in Yorkshire, northern England.

The Yorkshire Post reports that around 50 fire fighters are currently tackling the blaze which broke out earlier this afternoon.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 13.57 to reports of a fire in the C Block.

“We’ve got crews there from Pontefract, Normanton, Featherstone, Castleford and Wakefield.”

She added that all staff members are accounted for and there are no casualties.

Smoke is now blowing across the M62 Motorway, a major road that links urban centres in the north. There are reports traffic slowing down on the road, causing delays.

Ferrybridge is a major coal-fired power station, operated by energy giant SSE. According to their website “Ferrybridge C has two 198m (650ft) high chimneys and eight 115m (380ft) high cooling tower, which are the largest of their kind in Europe.”

It is not yet known how electricity supplies will be affected.
