Tim Tebow’s future in the NFL as a starting quarterback may be in jeopardy, as new Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said on Thursday he had no plans to acquire the highly popular yet polarizing quarterback.
“I can’t imagine a scenario in which he’ll be a Jacksonville Jaguar — even if he’s released,” Caldwell said, at his introductory press conference.
The New York Jets are expected to release Tebow after a year in which he did not gel with Jets head coach Rex Ryan and the team’s offense.
Tebow is from Jacksonville, and many thought he was destined to be a Jaguar, especially since the franchise, which has struggled to draw fans on Sundays, could have used a boost in attendance, which Tebow would have provided.
Jaguars owner Shad Khan, who expressed interest in Tebow last year, said that he hired Caldwell to rebuild the franchise and the decision was ultimately Caldwell’s.
“It’s not my decision,” Khan said. “I want to do whatever to help this team win. Who the players are is really the general manager’s and coaches’ — it’s a football-side operation decision. It’s really not my decision.”
Few teams have expressed interest in bringing Tebow on board as a starting quarterback. There has been some talk that Tebow could potentially try to play in the Canadian Football League if he does not land with an NFL team if the Jets do release him in the offseason.
