Top High School RB to Announce College Decision Saturday
One of the most anticipated announcements is set for this Saturday when Derrick Green, the nation’s #9 prospect according to Breitbart Sports, chooses between Auburn, Florida State, Michigan, and Tennessee.
Green is set to announce his decision on Saturday at 4pm EST at the Cultural Arts Center in Glen Allen, VA. We will cover that decision here at Breitbart Sports.
While Green’s recruitment will end this weekend, his performance at the next level will almost certainly keep his name in the college football conversation.
Looking at film, Green is the complete package. His coach, Patrick Kane of Hermitage High School, notes that Green’s “greatest strength as an athlete is the rare combination of size, power, and speed.” At 6’0”, 220lbs., Green is a physically imposing back, yet runs low allowing him to make cuts smoothly, has outstanding footwork, and his sub-4.4 forty gives him the speed to break away from the back.
While his coach cites that Green possesses a “talent level that doesn’t come around very often,” he spends far more time talking about his player’s work ethic.
“He loves working out,” says Kane. “He’s the kind of kid you have to scale back.”
While Green has the physical tools as well as the drive to succeed, the transition to the next level is always difficult.
“Pass protection, in particular, is a big jump,” said Kane.
However, we have seen numerous backs over the last few years make an immediate impact. Green has the ability to make an impact early.
Where he makes that impact will be decided on Saturday.
Kane confirmed that Green has largely narrowed his choice to three schools (Auburn, Michigan, and Tennessee), however, he added that Florida State has made a big push for his signature and could be in consideration in the final days.
While Auburn appeared to have an early edge, the coaching transition there has set the Tigers back. Auburn has tried to make up for lost ground, though.
Tennessee also went through a coaching change but kept running backs coach Jay Graham, who has strong appeal for Green. Florida State may have waited too long and Michigan is well positioned to land Green’s signature, although the prospect grew up a fan of the rival Buckeyes.
What was already clear from watching film is that whoever Green chooses will be getting an outstanding football player. After speaking with Kane, it is also clear that the school will be getting an outstanding individual. The coach described his player as a happy-go-lucky kid who encouraged teammates and stayed focused on his team rather than individual accomplishments. His coach pointed out that Green spent 17 quarters (35%) of this last season on the bench due to big leads.
Kane also described Green as coming from an excellent foundation.
“One of the main reasons he’s in this position is his mother and stepfather” Kane said. “They’ve made sure he’s doing right in the classroom and with his training. They are role model type parents.”
