On Wednesday, professional golfer Vijay Singh admitted he used deer antler spray but denied he was in any way aware that the extract contained a substance that is banned on the PGA Tour.
Singh said when he first received the product, he “reviewed the list of ingredients and did not see any prohibited substances.”
“I am absolutely shocked that deer antler spray may contain a banned substance and am angry that I have put myself in this position,” Singh said in a statement he released through the PGA Tour. “While I have used deer antler spray, at no time was I aware that it may contain a substance that is banned under the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Policy.”
Singh said he has “been in contact with the PGA Tour,” is “cooperating fully with their review,” and will “not be commenting further at this time.”
In a Sports Illustrated article, that was published on Tuesday, Singh said he used the deer antler spray and even paid $9,000 for the spray and other “new age” products from the company that reportedly supplied the same products to Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.
Singh told the magazine that he uses the spray “every couple of hours” and sleeps with “beam ray on and has put chips on his ankles, waist and shoulders.”
The deer antler spray in question contains IGF-1, which is banned by most professional sports organizations.
