NCAA Sued over Rule Barring Felons

A nonprofit group has sued the NCAA over the NCAA's policy that forbids felons from coaching because the group claims minority coaches are more likely to be felons.

Dominic Hardie, a high school girls’ basketball coach who has led his team in past NCAA-sanctioned tournaments, was unable to renew certification following the rule. He is now seeking an injunction so that he can coach in an upcoming game.

The NCAA stands by the new policy and plans to “vigorously defend this lawsuit.”

"Our policy has been unsuccessfully challenged in court previously," Bob Williams, the NCAA's vice president of communications, said in a statement. "We continue to believe convicted felons should not have access to youth at events where NCAA coaches are participating, and we will vigorously defend this lawsuit."

In 2011, a coach in Portland, Oregon also filed similar charges against the NCAA.
