Maryland's Upset of Duke Leaves Miami in Control of ACC

Mark Turgeon won plenty of big games at Texas A&M as one of the only teams to win at least one NCAA tournament game in his first five years. Today center Alex Lee’s (photo) domination of Duke Player of the Year candidate Mason Plumlee helped Turgeon to his first big one at Maryland with a stunner of Duke that almost guarantees Miami the ACC regular season title.

If Miami wins at Clemson tomorrow, they would be double digit favorites at www.kenpom.com in four of their final six games, meaning if they lose at 2nd place Duke and at home against third place Virginia they would win the title in a season in which they started unranked.

Maryland’s 83-81 win over the second-ranked Blue Devils on Saturday night quieted Turgeon’s critics.

“It has been a hard week on my family, hard on my son last week. He had to leave the stands because the fans were so hard on his dad,” Turgeon told the Associated Press.

That was in reaction to Maryland losing at home to third place Virginia to the coach who made the often fatal mistake of replacing a legend, Gary Williams.

Center Alex Len had 19 points and nine rebounds while holding Player of the Year candidate Mason Plumlee to just four points and three rebounds, and Seth Allen hit the game-winning free throws.

Len helped dominate the boards 40-20.

Allen scored 16 for the Terrapins, who won for only the second time in 14 tries against Duke.
