The suicide of an NFL great and death of an X-games competitor have raised the issue of the safety of athletes. Ray Chapman was the only player to ever die during a baseball game, but Major League Baseball is looking into new equipment, and Tuesday they were reminded why when Miami Marlins hard throwing prospect Jose Fernandez hit fellow prospect Giancarlo Stanton with a fastball in the back of the helmet.
Stanton was dazed, but stayed on his feat and said the beaning affected his eye site. In the 1980s, Dickie Thon was coming off a superstar season when he was hit with a fastball and had problems with double vision even when he attempted a comeback. His neck was bruised but there was no sign of a concussion according to manager Mike Redmond.
Stanton told Yahoo Sports, ”I wasn’t dizzy. I saw a little grayness and fuzziness on the outside of my eyes, but it’s subsiding now.”
