With 4:55 left in a game watched by the largest on-campus crowd in basketball history, Otto Porter hit a three pointer and was fouled, hitting the free throw to make the score Otto Porter 32, No. 8 Syracuse 37. Some questioned Breitbart Sports selecting Porter as a 1st team All-American this week, but in No. 11 Georgetowns final Big East trip to the Carreer Dome he ended Syracuse’s national best 38-game home winning streak almost by himself.
In making the All-American selection, Breitbart Sports noted Porter was scoring an incredible 29% as many opponents as the tough Georgetown defense was allowing. By the time Georgetown was done cruising to the 57-46 win Saturday he made that figure 72% – as Porter finished with 33 points.
No. 11 Georgetown’s domination in front of 35,012 ended one of the great Big East series as Syracuse heads to the ACC next year and Georgetown prepares to leave the following year with the Catholic 7. ironically Syracuse can now end the nation’s third longest win streak if they win at Marquette Monday. The five longest home win streaks at the beginning of the day were:
1) Syracuse – 38 games – ended by Gtown Saturday
2) South Dakota State – 30 games
3) Colorado State – 27 games
4) Marquette – 23 games
5) Iowa State – 21 games
Porter, one of the most complete players in the country, added eight rebounds and five steals. He did not rest once in the game, and scored the 33 points while taking only 19 shots from the floor. He made seven of nine two-pointers, five of 10 3-pointers and four of four free throws.
It was not a matter of poor defense by Syracuse, as the rest of Georgetown’s team hit only seven of 35 shots for 20 percent from the floor.
In 1980, Georgetown ended Syracuse’s 57-game home winning streak and the game has been a classic during many Big East match-ups since then.
