Report: SF Shopping QB Alex Smith

Alex Smith, the first pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, will perhaps once again shake up the top of the draft. The 49ers have been actively shopping Smith and have two suitors with high draft picks in the Kansas City Chiefs (#1 overall) and the Arizona Cardinals (#7 overall).

Both teams are looking at taking a quarterback with their first round pick so this trade could have profound ramifications for Geno Smith (West Virginia) and Matt Barkley (USC).

Of the two teams, Kansas City, seems to have the inside track which would free up the Chiefs to either let offensive tackle Brandon Albert leave via free agency to pave the way for drafting Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel or, if the re-sign Albert, they could either trade the pick or address another need.

The Cardinals are likely torn between addressing their need at quarterback or selecting an offensive tackle.

Smith, who lost his job last season to Colin Kaepernick after suffering an injury, has had a rocky NFL career but, ironically, was playing his best football before being benched making him an attractive option to teams needing a new starter at the quarterback position.

No deal has been reached and any trade cannot officially be completed until March 12.
