The Chicago Blackhawks were down 1-0 and 2:02 away from losing their first game in regulation in 22 games to start the NHL season at Detroit on Sunday when Patrick Kane scored to send the game into overtime and guarantee the Blackhawks another point.
The Blackhawks have now earned a point in 22 consecutive games to start the NHL season, which is an NHL record.
With 2:02 left in the third period and their record streak on the line, Kane got the puck past Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard, silencing the raucous Joe Louis Arena crowd. Kane almost scored the game-winning goal in the overtime period, but his shot hit the side of the net as the time expired. In the shootout, Kane scored the winner, giving the Blackhawks the shootout win and two points.
The Blackhawks (19-0-3) have 41 points. Anaheim, with 32 points, is the closest team to them.
