During ESPN's telecast of the Big East tournament game between Seton Hall and Syracuse on Monday afternoon, ESPN updated its viewers that a new Pope had been selected and white smoke was coming out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was selected as the new Pope, and he chose the name Pope Francis I.
The selection of the new pope was of utmost importance to many of the Big East's Catholic fans. Seton Hall is a Catholic school and the so-called "Catholic 7"--Georgetown, Marquette, St. John’s, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence and DePaul--will split from the current Big East to form a new Big East conference next year with Xavier, Butler and another team, possibly Creighton.
Schools like Syracuse, which will leave for the Atlantic Coast Conference after this season, prompted the Big East to end up splitting.
Syracuse defeated Seton Hall 75-63 after struggling for most of the game.
