Nationals 1st to Win 3 Games

The Washington Nationals capped a packed schedule of baseball Thursday afternoon by becoming the first team in the Majors to win three games, improving to 3-0. Miami finally scored for the first time this season in the second inning, but Bryce Harper singled and scored in the first to make it 2-0,and then singled to drive in another run and raise his batting average to .600 in the third inning.

The Seattle Mariners, New York Mets and Chicago White Sox all failed to win their third game earlier Thursday afternoon. Afternoon games are more common on Thursday to give visiting teams more time to travel to the location of their Friday, Saturday, and Sunday location.

At that point the game was over, as Miami did hit better than the first two nights with eight total hits off of Jordan Zimmermann, but could not score again. Zimmermann has now given up more runs than any other Nationals pitcher through three games with one allowed.

Jayson Werth did hit a three-run homer in the seventh to leave no doubt against the Marlins, who now have the second lowest payroll ahead of only the Astros.

The Nationals’ great pitching will get more of a test when they go to Cincinnati to face another early season favorite, but pending the late games Thursday, they are the only team in the majors with three wins.
