The consensus #1 overall prospect for the 2014 NFL Draft, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, is likely out for the remainder of spring practice with neck and back pain as well because of what has been described as a “slight concussion.”
Clowney was the nation’s #1 overall recruit in the Class of 2011 and has not disappointed since arriving at South Carolina. In two seasons, he has accumulated 21 sacks and 35.5 tackles for loss.
His dominance has earned national attention, and he is seen as a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender. Additionally, his memorable hit in the Outback Bowl led to an astounding streak on ESPN’s top plays.
Some had suggested that Clowney ought to sit out this season and avoid any injury that might damage his status as one of the best non-quarterback prospects in recent memory. While it is not likely that these particular ailments could take Clowney out of the picture, this is exactly what he would hope to avoid.
Clowney remains committed to playing out the season for the Gamecocks. What remains to be seen is whether bottom-tier NFL franchises will remain committed to winning or simply compete in the “Clowney Sweepstakes,” racing to the worst record to land the elite prospect.
