Tiger Woods has been chasing Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major titles since he first started playing golf, and Nicklaus said this week at the Masters that he believes Woods will break his record.
“Obviously, the older he gets and if he doesn’t win, it makes my record move out further,” Nicklaus said after the Champions Dinner on Tuesday. “But I’ve said it and I’ll continue to say it, that I still expect him to break my record. I think he’s just too talented, too driven and too focused on that.”
Nicklaus said if Woods wins this weekend at Augusta, “it would be a very large step toward regaining the confidence” that he lost after his injuries and personal scandals prevented Woods from winning a major since 2008.
Woods has 14 majors and indicated earlier this week that he wants to win many more majors than Nicklaus. Nicklaus won his 18th and final major at the 1986 Masters as a 46-year-old in one of the most memorable come-from-behind wins in the sport’s history.
