IRS Raids Browns Owner's Company on Tax Day
While most Americans were running to mail forms to the IRS Monday, IRS agents were raiding the Knoxville headquarters of the Flying J truck chain owned by the owner of the Cleveland Browns and the Governor of Tennessee. During the GOP primary for Governor of Tennessee, Zach Wamp labelled Bill Haslam (pictured) a billionaire, and after the election Haslam put all of his investments into a blind trust - except the Flying J chain.
Haslam said that he was not a billionaire, even though is brother and Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy is listed as a billionaire by Forbes.
The FBI was part of the raid, but would not discuss details. Jimmy Haslam, the CEO of Pilot Flying J and owner of the Browns, said Tuesday it appeared the investigation centered around a few stores that the authorities claim did not give rebates due customers.
U.S. Attorney Bill Killian would not tell the AP why the four search warrants were issued. Employees were ordered out of the building as the IRS and FBI agents searched it.
