In a list of top sports veterans, Joe DiMaggio emerged as the top-ranked athlete that served in our nation’s military. The New York Yankee is considered one of the all-time great baseball players.
The Yankee Clipper’s 56-game hitting streak still stands as the Major League record. He was known as one of the most graceful players on and off the field. The Northern California native served in the Air Force.
Frank Brimsek (hockey), Bob Feller (baseball), Pat Tillman (football), Hank Greenberg (baseball), Roger Staubach (football), Yogi Berra (baseball), Warren Spahn (baseball), Rocky Bleier (football), and Ted Williams (baseball) round out the top ten list compiled by Real Clear Sports.
Most of the athletes listed served in World War II.
Tillman, however, died while serving our country in the War on Terror and famously turned down millions to continue wearing the uniform of the Arizona Cardinals to instead put on the uniform of our armed forces.
