American Bethanie Mattek-Sands Defeats Li Na at French Open

American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, ranked 67th in the world, pulled off the upset and defeated #6 Li Na in three sets in the second round at the French Open 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. She is the fourth American woman to advance to the third round.

She did not qualify for January’s Australian Open and has a 10-8 record this year. Li won the French Open in 2011, but since then she has lost in the first or second round in four of the last eight Grand Slams.

Li took the first set 7-5, but Mattek-Sands took over in the second and third set. She won seven straight games and took a 5-0 lead in the third set. Li started slow down before the first rain delay and never recovered.

20-year-old superstar Sloane Stephens also advanced to third round when she defeated fellow American Vania King 6-1, 6-3.
