The Blue Jays notched a four-hit shutout in the most improbable way Wednesday night, starting reliever Esmil Rogers and bringing in two minor-league callups to blank the Braves, 3-0.
Kris Medlen (1-6) did not last even as long as Rogers’ 3 1/3 inning start, exiting with a leg injury suffered with a line drive in the second. While expected to make his next start, his leg was heavily wrapped after the game.
Baltimore 9, Washington 6
Eight home runs were hit by the Orioles and Nationals combined in a wild game at Camden Yards, a 9-6 Orioles victory.
Three were hit by the Nationals’ Ryan Zimmerman, knocking out Orioles starter Chris Tillman and building a 6-2 Nationals lead until the sixth and seventh innings, when Markakis, Pearce, and Chris Davis all homered for the Orioles, building a 9-6 lead they would never relinquish. For Davis, it was his second homer of the game; Roger Bernadina also homered for the Nationals; Jordan Zimmermann gave up seven runs in six-plus innings in the loss, and gave up more than three runs for the first time in 16 starts.
Philadelphia 4, Boston 3
Domonic Brown hit a pair of home runs, Erik Kratz and Ryan Howard also homered behind the stellar pitching of Kyle Kendrick as the Phillies beat the Red Sox 4-3 Wednesday night.
Kendrick (5-3) allowed two runs in six innings, while John Lackey (3-5) took the loss for Boston despite only giving up three runs in six innings. The Phillies won their second straight to get within one game of .500.
NY Mets 9, NY Yankees 4
The Mets beat the Yankees 9-4 Wednesday night, marking a surprisingly lopsided series in which the Mets will go for the sweep Thursday.
Yankees starter David Phelps (3-3) got only one out in taking the loss, allowing five runs on four hits. Jeremy Hefner (1-5) won for the first time this season, giving up three runs in six innings. Marlon Byrd hit a home run for the surging Mets.
Tampa Bay 3, Miami 1
Roberto Hernandez (3-5) tossed 8 2/3 innings of one-run baseball, outdueling the Marlins’ Tom Koehler (0-3) to beat the Marlins 3-1 Wednesday night.
The Rays scratched out a 2-1 lead after one inning, at which point the two starters cruised to the eighth. The Rays go for the series sweep Thursday.
