19-Year-Old American Amateur 5 Off Lead After 71

On a day when golfers struggled mightily and Tiger Woods shot his third-worst round as a professional, 19-year-old American amateur Michael Kim briefly, after four birdies on the back nine, was at even par and on the front page of the leaderboard.

The junior from Cal Berkeley then promptly bogeyed two holes and double bogeyed another to shoot a one-over 71 in what could have been a spectacular round in the 60s.

After going +1 on the front nine, the 2013 college golfer of the year promptly birdied the 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th holes to rocket up the leaderboard. Then the first time U.S. Open entrant gave it all back.

He is still at +4 for the tournament, five shots off the lead, in tenth place and not completely out of contention.
