Murray Advances To Wimbledon Final

Hometown favorite Andy Murray beat Poland’s young sensation Jerzy Janowicz 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to his second straight Wimbledon final on Friday. A British man has not won Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.

Murray did not perform well in the first set. Janowicz is young, but he has a powerful serve and incredible forehand. His serves were registering between 135-143 mph. His serve caught Murray off guard and he could not keep up with Janowicz. Janowicz had Murray running all over the court and unable to return shots.

It did not last long and Murray came back with a vengeance. It helped that Janowicz was hitting more double faults than aces despite the power behind his serve. Janowicz kept the heat on Murray, but Murray would not back down. Murray’s aces helped push him over the top and win the set. He was down in the third set 4-1, but quickly recovered to win the set by sweeping five straight games and wearing out Janowicz.

But the match was filled with dramatics. The epic match between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro lasted 4 hours and 49 minutes, which meant the Murray and Janowicz match would proceed into the night. Murray was ahead two sets to one. He was on a roll and Janowicz was slowing down. At 8:40 PM London time the tournament referee Andrew Jarrett spoke to umpire Jake Garner and decided to close the roof. It is important to note Janowicz did ask Garner many times when the roof would close, but he did not cause a scene. However, when Jarrett announced he would close the roof Murray loudly voiced his displeasure at the interruption. Overall, it did not interrupt his play though.

After the small break Murray calmed down and played as if nothing happened. Janowicz was dominated and could not keep up with Murray. He broke Janowicz’s serve in the third game and Janowicz’s many double faults helped Murray breeze into the Wimbledon final.

He will meet Novak Djokovic, the #1 player in the world, in the final on Sunday.
