NL East Rundown: Break up the Marlins

Miami 4, Atlanta 3

The Miami Marlins got a rare series win in Atlanta, coming back in the ninth inning against Craig Kimbrel to beat the Braves, 4-3. AJ Ramos pitched two scoreless innings for the win, Steve Cishek got the save and Craig Kimbrel took the loss.

The Marlins scored three runs in the first off Henderson Alvarez, who then shut down the Braves thereafter to allow the Marlins to catch up. Marcell Ozuna had a home run and drove in two for Miami, who have win four straight series.

Washington 8, Milwaukee 5

The Nationals earned a series split with the Brewers, riding a dramatic seventh inning, three run homer from Wilson Ramos to an 8-5 win. Ramos, who was just activated off the disabled list with a pulled hamstring, had three hits and drove in five runs for the Nationals.

Drew Storen got the win despite blowing a save and allowing three runs on two home runs by Betancourt and Gomez. The Nats bailed him out though by Ramos’ heroics in the bottom of the inning, coming back against former National Tom Gorzelanny (1-1).

Philadelphia 6, Pittsburgh 4

Cole Hamels (3-11) got a rare win, beating the best team in baseball to do it as the Phillies beat the Pirates 6-4 on Independence Day. Gerrit Cole (4-1) took the loss, his first in the major leagues, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Jonathan Papelbon got his 17th save with a perfect 9th. The Phillies won a series in Pitsburgh for the first time since 2008.

Arizona 5, New York Mets 4 (15 innings)

The Diamondbacks improved to 10-3 in extra innings, beating the Mets 5-4 to earn a split in their series. Chaz Roe (1-0) got the win despite blowing the save by allowing a home run to Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the bottom of the 14th.

Cliff Pennington for the game winning hit with two out in the 15th off Scott Rice (3-5). Arizona scored in the 13th, 14th, and 15th, but the Mets ties the game in the 13th and 14th on solo home runs. Brad Ziegler got his first save after retiring Nieuwenhuis with runners on second and third.
