AL East: David Price Complete Game Leads Rays to Win over Red Sox
David Price turned in a strong performance, throwing a complete game and leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-1 victory over the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox. The Rays, who were 1.5 games behind Boston heading into Wednesday's contest, now sit only a half game out of the lead.
Price scattered five hits over his nine innings of work, striking out four and only yielding one run. Since his return from the DL, Price has played up to his talent level, going 4-1 in his last 5 starts. The Rays hurler was efficient and effective, keeping the Red Sox off balance all night while only using 97 pitches on the way to his complete game victory.
The Rays have turned their season around over the course of the past few weeks, going 9-1 in the 10 games before the All-Star break and 5-1 in the first six games after the break. Much of this turn around is due to the pitching staff finally beginning to play to their potential. The Rays pitching has improved from 20th in the league to 12th over the past 3 weeks.
A win in Thurday's game would place the Rays in first place in the AL East. If the Rays pitching continues to be this consistent, they will be hard to catch if they take over that top spot.
