Isner Defeats Top-Ranked Djokovic in Cincinnati

A lot has been expected of John Isner since men’s tennis lacks American talent, and Friday night he finally gave America something to cheer about. He topped #1 Novak Djokovic at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, OH, 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5.

Djokovic needs to win Cincinnati in order to win all nine ATP Masters events. He has lost in the final four times. This is also the first time Isner reached the semifinals in Cincinnati, but it is the second time he has knocked off Djokovic. He beat him at the Indian Wells semifinals last year. Isner is very happy about this win:

“A fantastic win for me,” Isner said. “Certainly one of my greatest memories as a tennis player.”

He will play Juan Martin del Potro in the next round. Andy Murray, the #2 seed, lost to Thomas Berdych 6-3, 6-4. Serena Williams, who has not won in Cincinnati, advanced to the next round against Li Na.
