Olbermann: There Should Statues of John Carlos in Every City

On Monday’s Olbermann, Keith Olbermann returned to ESPN and opined that there should be a John Carlos (right) statue in every city.

“There should be statues of him in every city,” Olbermann said. He then said “people don’t know what he went through before and after” the his moment at the 1968 Olympics.

Carlos, along with Tommie Smith, raised his black-gloved first on the podium in what was regarded as a “black power” salute while America’s national anthem was playing during the 1968 Olympics. Carlos, who also showed solidarity with blue collar workers by unbuttoning his jacket, won the bronze while Smith won gold in the 200 meters. 

During the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011, Carlos addressed the Occupy Wall Street protestors, saying to the crowd:

“I am here for you…  “Why? Because I am you. We’re here forty-three years later because there’s a fight still to be won. This day is not for us but for our children to come.”

He appeared with Olbermann on his Current TV show that year as well.
