Phil Mickelson shot a 7-under 28 on the front nine of the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, bogeyed the 10th, and then eagled the 11th hole and was at -8 as he went to the 12th hole.
Chasing a 59–or even a 58–Mickelson, though, Mickelson ended up shooting a 8-under 63 after bogeying the 18th hole. The Golf Channel started airing the tournament three hours before its scheduled broadcast because of Mickelson’s start. Mickelson leads the tournament by three shots.
Mickelson is playing with Tiger Woods and Adam Scott in the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Earlier this year in Scottsdale, Mickelson could have shot a 59–or a 58–but missed putts on the final two holes to deny him a chance at a history. On the 18th hole, he barely missed a putt to card a 59 and he instead settled for a 60, just days after he flew in Butch Harmon for a hitting session.
