WVU Scrapes Past William and Mary 24-17

West Virginia struggled mightily in their season opener, but ultimately prevailed 24-17 over the William and Mary Tribe of the FCS. In their second season in the Big XII, the West Virginia Mountaineers might face an uphill battle.

William and Mary jumped out first to an early lead, getting into the West Virginia backfield and generating turnovers. Tribe Junior wide receiver Tre McBride made some impressive catches while being blanketed by coverage, helping William and Mary go into halftime with a 17-7 lead.

West Virginia stepped up in the 2nd half, however, holding William and Mary scoreless over the final two quarters. Mountaineer running back Charles Sims, a transfer from Houston, compiled 120 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown to help the WVU score 17 unanswered points in the final half of play.

West Virginia will certainly have plenty to improve upon as they begin conference play next week against the Oklahoma Sooners.
