Representatives of the Oneida Nation accused the NFL of defending a “racist” Redskins name after a 90-minute meeting in New York with NFL executives on Wednesday.
According to ESPN, “the Oneida representatives left disappointed” after asking NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Redskins owner Dan Snyder to visit their communities and banning teams from using “racist” nicknames. Oneida Nation spokesperson Joel Barkin said the NFL “defended the use of a racist name” during the meeting:
“We are very disappointed … ,” he said. “This is the beginning of a process. It’s clear that they don’t see how this is not a unifying term. They don’t have a complete appreciation for the breadth of opposition of Native Americans to this mascot and name.”
