NY Dem: Ban Tackling, Soccer Headers for Kids Under 14
A Democrat New York state lawmaker wants to ban tackle football and headers in soccer for kids under 14 years of age.
According to the Times Union, there is a current bill that was reportedly introduced in February that would prohibit "tackling among players younger than 11."
Assemblyman Michael Benedetto, a Bronx Democrat, though, wants that age increased to 14 and plans to introduce another bill banning "headers" in soccer for the same age group.
He was joined last Thursday by Dr. Robert Cantu, co-director of BU's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, who said youngsters are vulnerable to a "bobblehead doll effect."
Those involved in Youth football said Benedetto's ban, motivated by the flurry of news and PBS specials about concussions, could be "catastrophic" for youth football because "if it passed, the measure — which at this point seems to have little support from fellow lawmakers, and no sponsor in the state Senate — could gut Pop Warner's 5-15 age demographic in New York."
