Alabama reportedly offered head coach Nick Saban a contract extension on Friday, and it is still unsigned.
After reports that Texas head coach Mack Brown may resign and wild rumors that the Longhorns may even offer Saban a 10-year deal worth $100 million (that rumor has been around since 2011, for the record) and 1% of the Longhorn football network, officials in Alabama are reportedly getting nervous, according to Paul “the voice of the South” Finebaum.
Saban’s agent is Jimmy Sexton, who is known to maximize leverage to get his clients more lucrative contracts better than nearly every other agent. Recently, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn, another Sexton client, got a six-year contract extension worth $3.85 million a year after reports surfaced that Malzahn’s “dream job” was at Texas.
Saban currently makes $5.85 million a year and has a contract that goes to 2020.
Know for his prowess in stockpiling talent on the recruiting trail, Saban put himself on college football’s Mount Rushmore last year when he won his fourth national title (one was with LSU in 2003, and three were with Alabama in 2009, 2011, and 2012) in a decade, joining the legendary Bear Bryant, John McKay, and Frank Leahy as the only coaches to have won four titles in the poll era.
Saban was going for a three-peat this year–and a fifth title for himself–when Auburn derailed his dreams in an Iron Bowl for the ages on a 109-yard return of a missed 57-yard field goal for a touchdown.
The drama and the rumors will likely pick up until Brown officially resigns and Texas hires its next coach.
