Glock turned the semi-automatic handgun world upside down when they introduced their flagship Model 17 9mm in the the U.S. in the 1980s. Glocks steadily became–and continue to be–a staple service gun for police departments around the country.
Now, in 2014, Glock looks ready to turn the semi-automatic world upside down all over again. This time with a slim, single-stack .380 handgun marketed as a concealed carry pistol and a police backup.
The Glock Model 42.
Guns and Ammo magazine has shot the gun, and in their February issue they report that it is a Glock through and through. They describe it as scaled down version of the larger models, yet one that retains the same easy dis-assembly, the same basic parts, and the renowned “Safe Action” trigger system found on all Glock models.
The Model 42 weighs just 13.4 ounces unloaded. It is less than an inch wide, just over 4 inches tall, and just under 5 inches long. Its single-stack magazine holds 6 rounds–that’s a total of 7 if you count the one chambered.
It should be noted that Glock has been making .380’s for law enforcement since the mid-1990s. But the Model 42 is the first civilian .380 pistol they have produced. And the other Glocks–Models 25 and 28–were bigger guns.
The Model 42 is truly compact. It is has everything we have come to love about other Glocks, only in a smaller, more concealable package.
Looks like it’s going to be a great gun for a jacket pocket, a purse, an ankle or a waistband.
Price is expected to be just under $500.
