Basketball players and coaches at Oregon say Arizona State fans spat on them during and after Saturday’s contest in Tempe, Arizona.
Oregon assistant coach Brian Fish told the Oregonian that fans spat on him and athletic trainer Clay Jamieson while the team was walking past the student section after Oregon’s 74-72 loss. In addition, Fish said Oregon players were spat on before halftime.
The Ducks were reportedly “followed to their locker room by two university police officers investigating the spitting, which officers told UO staff members was witnessed by at least two people” and reported immediately after.
“Say what you want to us but don’t spit on us,” Fish said, before saying he “didn’t want any charges, just for him to be scared (witless). Fish then said, “We all deserve second chances, he’s a college kid. But that was completely uncalled for.”
Oregon head coach Dana Altman said that the way the arena is set up is inviting problems, saying it is a “security issue having us walk through the students on the way out. … We were in a tough situation at half but that’s a poor security there. That’s not good.”
“It’s not a good situation,” he said. “They need to address it. That’s all I should say. That’s my opinion, they can do whatever the heck they want but that’s my opinion.”
One student whom witnesses saw spitting at the coaches reportedly has had his season tickets revoked.
