A former Japanese Prime Minister criticized figure skating legend Mao Asada for falling in her short program on Wednesday.
Yoshiro Mori, the former Japanese Prime Minister who is new chairman for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics’ organizing committee, said that Asada has a habit of “always falling at the most critical time” and that she must have incurred “psychological damage” from falling during the team skate.
Asada is considered the second-best figure skater in the world to “Queen” Yuna Kim of South Korea. Asada won the silver medal in 2010 at the Vancouver Games but stumbled to 16th before the free skate after the fall, which was on a triple axel. Asada, who successfully completed it on Thursday, was the first women ever to successfully land a triple axel.
She turned in one of the best free skate performances this year on Thursday to move up 10 spots to finish 6th.
