Patriots Re-Sign Julian Edelman
The New England Patriots re-signed their 2013 leader in receptions and receiving yards today. Julian Edelman, who had been courted by the San Francisco 49ers, reached an agreement with the Patriots today. Terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
A Patriots player in the mold of Troy Brown or Mike Vrabel, Edelman brings versatility to a coach who clearly values that trait. A quarterback at Kent State, Edelman emerged as a worthy replacement in the slot for Wes Welker. The seventh-round pick ranks, along with Devin Hester, as the co-leader in average yards per punt-return among active players. He provides the Patriots with an emergency quarterback should they not wish to expend a roster spot on a third QB and even plays defensive back in nickel packages when called upon.
With a Patriots receiving corps that returned none of its top five yardage leaders from 2012, Edelman blossomed this season past as his fellow pass catchers often stumbled. He caught 105 balls for 1,056 yards and six touchdowns.
