Navy running back Will McKamey, who was airlifted to a hospital after collapsing during spring practice on Saturday, died on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old freshman from Tennessee, according to the Associated Press, “died at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore on Tuesday with his family by his side.” He did not play in a game last year.
He was “hospitalized in 2012 with a brain injury but was cleared to play after seeing four neurosurgeons and undergoing several CAT scans and MRIs,” according to his family.
According to the Baltimore Sun, “as a senior at Grace Christian Academy, in 2012, McKamey collapsed during a two-point conversion in a game”:
McKamey was transported to a hospital in Chattanooga and spent a few days in intensive care while doctors monitored bleeding and swelling in the brain. He did not undergo surgery, but his high school career ended.
He won the state’s Class A Mr. Football Back award that season after scoring 28 touchdowns and rushing for more than 2,000 yards.
