Jared Allen Signs with Bears

Jared Allen, twelfth on the NFL’s all-time sack list, departs Minnesota after six seasons. He’s not, to the dismay of Vikings fans, departing the NFC North.

The prolific pass rusher signed with the Chicago Bears early today. Allen, 32, agreed to a four-year deal worth $32 million. About half of the money is guaranteed. Allen fills a void on the Bears defensive line left by Julius Peppers, a pass rusher just a few slots down on the all-time sacks list from Allen. The reigning champion Seahawks appeared poised to land Allen last week. But the defensive end made clear throughout the free agency process that he would retire before signing for less than what he believes he is worth.

Allen boasts 128.5 career sacks. His seasonal sack totals have not been under 11 since the 2006 campaign. His 22 sacks in 2011 rank just a half-sack below Michael Strahan’s single-season mark.
